“CALM” in a Bottle: How Magnesium Oil Became My Nighttime Superpower (and Daytime Sidekick)

If you’re anything like me—juggling life, work, and the mysterious aches that come with being a fully grown human—you might be on the lookout for something simple and natural that actually helps. That’s how my daily (and nightly) love affair with magnesium chloride oil spray began. I handcraft a magnesium oil spray right here at Redstone Apothecary in Southern Utah, and I use it religiously. Not because I’m trying to sell it (okay, that’s a perk), but because I literally can’t imagine my routine without it anymore. Let me give you the scoop.

The Day Blend: CALM Day

This blend is made with Dead Sea Magnesium Flakes, distilled water, and organic MCT oil. It’s simple, clean, and designed to support your busy, beautiful life. I use CALM Day when my muscles are whining from garden work, hiking too far, or just—you know—existing in a body that’s not 25 anymore. A few sprays on my neck, shoulders, or calves, and I feel like I’m doing something good for myself without needing a chiropractor on speed dial.

Bonus benefit? It can also be used as a natural deodorant alternative! Magnesium helps neutralize odor-causing bacteria, and since this spray contains only skin-loving, non-toxic ingredients, it’s a fresh and gentle option for those looking to ditch the conventional stuff.

The Night Blend: CALM Night

Now, this one has the same base but with a dreamy addition: therapeutic-grade lavender essential oil. If CALM Day is your chill co-worker, CALM Night is your soft-spoken best friend who tucks you in and tells you everything is going to be okay. Here’s where the story gets real: I haven’t slept soundly since the birth of my youngest child. That was checks calendar 23 years ago. Since then, it’s been a mix of tossing, turning, staring at the ceiling, and negotiating with my brain about why it thinks 3 a.m. is a great time to plan next week’s meals. Enter magnesium oil. I started using CALM Night on the soles of my feet before bed—about 10 sprays (which gives you around 110 mg of elemental magnesium)—and something started to shift. It’s not magic, but it is soothing. It helps me relax, calms the leg cramps that sneak in around bedtime, and eases that general “why does my whole body feel like a rusty hinge?” vibe I sometimes wake up with. Bonus: it absorbs fast, doesn’t leave me greasy, and smells amazing thanks to the lavender.

Where to Use It

  • Soles of the feet – for nighttime relaxation (my go-to)
  • Abdomen – especially if your digestive system is a little grumbly
  • Shoulders, neck, back, hips – for those "I carried groceries and now I need a nap" days
  • Calves and thighs – great post-hike or post-garden
  • Underarms – as a natural deodorant with CALM Day
  • Wrists or temples – a quick refresh during stressful afternoons

A Little Humor Because We’re All in This Together

Look, I’m not claiming this oil will turn you into a serene Zen master who floats through life in a state of bliss. But if it helps you sleep better, cramp less, and groan a little quieter when you get up off the couch—well, I’d call that a win. So whether you’re navigating motherhood, menopause, or just plain mayhem, CALM Day and CALM Night are here for you.
